Meet The Riot #3: Midfield

Name: Giles BARNES
RMR Squad Number: 7
Position: AM RC
Signed: 25/02/09, P/Exchange for Marco Criscuolo (G700 F.C.)

Real-Life:

Having scored 7 goals in 12 international appearances for England at Under-19 level whilst at Derby County, Giles Barnes has caught the eye of Premier League side Fulham. The pacy attacking midfielder is currently on loan at the Cottagers, with a view to a permanent £4m-move at the end of the 2008-09 season.

RMR Bio:

Giles Barnes had already proven himself a consistent performer for several top-ranked clubs when he was snapped up from G700 F.C. in a swap deal, with RMR prodigy Marco Criscuolo moving in the other direction. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength at Riot, playing some of the best football of his career. His exciting movement and creative passing have made him a fan favourite, and as well as maintaining a good strike rate for a midfielder, he has also contributed a great number of assists.

Name: AROUCA
RMR Squad Number: 8
Position: DM + M R
Signed: 01/12/08, £140,000 Initial Squad

Real-Life:

A diminuitive Brazilian playmaker who has spent most of his career at Fluminense, Arouca was signed by League Champions Sao Paulo FC on a long-term contract. He has represented his country at both U17 and U21 levels, including being a part of the Brazilian U17 side which won the U17 World Cup in 2003.

RMR Bio:

Arouca is, quite simply, the rock on which River Medway Riot has been built. The club's star signing on day one, he has been the man in the middle of the pitch through which everything flows. Playing more often as a central midfielder than a defensive one, his quick feet and intelligent passing saw him form the effective Brazilian triangle with Paulinho Dias and Saulo for several seasons. With over 600 appearances to his name, he is also the club's highest earner, and has repeatedly committed his future to the Riot as a one-club man.

Name: PAULINHO DIAS
RMR Squad Number: 14
Position: DM
Signed: 12/12/08, £100,000 Transfer Auction (Youth FC)

Real-Life:

Having been a hot youth prospect at Cruzeiro, Paulinho Dias is now a regular starter for Ipatinga, who finished bottom of the Brazilian Serie A at the end of the 2008 season.

RMR Bio:

As River Medway Riot's first six-figure signing, it took some time for Paulinho Dias to settle in at the club, turning in some distinctly average performances in the first season. However, once he began to play alongside Arouca, rather than competing for the same position, Paulinho Dias began to blossom, anchoring the midfield, breaking up opposition attacks and directing the pace of the game. While leaving the fancier passing to Saulo and Arouca, Dias's role in the side is to win the ball and put his foot on it, a task which he has mastered, and he is improving season on season.

Name: Jozef "Jojo" MICHALIK (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 16
Position: M C + AM L
Signed: 03/12/08, £10,000 Wage Auction

RMR Bio:

The very first graduate of the River Medway Riot youth academy, Jozef Michalik quickly made the jump from U17 to senior football. While competition for first-team places was fierce, Michalik established himself ahead of Lucas Correa and Lu Lin to become the first choice left winger with intelligent running and a never-say-die attitude. A change of tactics away from wing-based play has seen Michalik pushed back onto the subs bench for season 4, but with plenty of years of football ahead of him, he is looking to be an excellent prospect for leading the next generation of stars.

Name: Oscar SANZ (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 22
Position: M C
Signed: 30/12/08, £1 Transfer Auction (KRAZY KLOWNS F.C.)

RMR Bio:

With many clubs desperate to cut their wage bill around the turn of the New Year, young Oscar Sanz found himself moving to the Riot for the sum of £1. Following two good seasons in the youth team, Sanz found himself on the fringes of a failing senior team, and has made almost 100 first team appearances, often from the bench. The change of tactics and relegation of Jozef Michalik to the subs bench has seen Sanz less involved this season, but he continues to be a menace in the youth squad, and is developing his game nicely.

Name: Michael WOODS
RMR Squad Number: 23
Position: M C
Signed: 01/12/08, £24,000 Initial Squad

Real-Life:

A redheaded midfielder, teenager Michael Woods is on Chelsea's books, but has so far only made cameo appearances in cup games. Hotly tipped as one for the future, he has represented England at U16, U17 and U19 level.

RMR Bio:

Michael Woods is a name reasonably known to FM players, a prospect who generally does very well commanding the midfield. With that in mind, he was brought into the initial RMR squad, but has never really succeeded in making the grade. Following a barely passable first season, he has since made only a handful of appearances in the Riot blue, finding himself loaned out to a number of other sides in unsuccessful attempts to find him some form. He seems destined to be the star that never was.

Name: Omar GUERRA
RMR Squad Number: 15
Position: AM/F C
Signed: 23/03/09, £65,000 End-of-Contract Auction (FC Highlanders)

Real-Life:

Playing in Ecuador's Serie A, Colombian striker Omar Guerra has travelled around the country, currently wearing the colours of Club Deportivo Tecnico Universitario. With his bald head and bold forward play, he averages ten goals per season.

RMR Bio:

Following the success of season four's five-man attack, a key target in the end-of-season transfer frenzy was to bring in players who were comfortable as both an out-and-out striker and in a deeper, AM role. With FC Highlanders becoming defunct, Omar Guerra became available, and fit the bill perfectly. Although his strike rate at Highlanders was disappointing (in contrast with an excellent assist rate), he has already shown himself ready to make the most of a new opportunity at a new club, scoring as many in 25 games as he had in 85 previously at Highlanders.

Meet The Riot: #2 Defence

Name: Reto "Ziggy" ZIEGLER
RMR Squad Number: 18
Position: D/WB/AM L
Signed: 24/02/09, £126,000 Wage Auction

Real-Life:

Swiss International Reto Ziegler is a legitimate star on the world stage, and considered one of the brightest left-sided prospects in Europe. Having appeared for Spurs under both Jacques Santini and Martin Jol as a youth, a loan move to Italian club Sampdoria was made permanent in 2007.

RMR Bio:

Since arriving at Preach Clubrooms, "Ziggy" Ziegler's versatility has given him a very solid run in the first team, making over 100 appearances and establishing himself as the first-choice for the left side. Usually starting games as a wing-back, he is known to drift forwards if required, as well as showing creativity from set pieces.

Name: Mohamed Salah GHAZOUANI (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 21
Position: SW + D C
Signed: 23/02/09, £12,600 End-of-Contract Auction (Spanish Fork FC)

RMR Bio:

A highly-talented sweeper, Mohamed Saleh Ghazouani was much courted when his Spanish Fork FC contract was due to expire. Dominant in the air and decent on the ground, the teenager is knocking on the door of the first team, and looks set to be an RMR superstar for years to come.

Name: FABIANO
RMR Squad Number: 28
Position: D C
Signed: 23/02/09, £15,400 End-of-Contract Auction (Hamilton 1967)

Real-Life:

Research suggests that Fabiano was last seen playing for the U20 side of Brazilian side Marilia, although whether this is still the case is unknown.

RMR Bio:

A big, strong, two-footed defender, Fabiano's signing from renowned side Hamilton 1967 was big news. However, some shaky early appearances saw him lose his confidence and spot in the team to Michele Canini, and since then he has drifted further and further from the first team setup. A loan spell at Seaview has given him some game time, but his long-term future remains to be seen.

Name: Roberto TACCHI (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 31
Position: D/WB/AM R + DM + F C
Signed: 23/02/09, £154,000 End-of-Contract Auction (Hamilton 1967)

RMR Bio:

Signed at the same time as Hamilton 1967 compatriot Fabiano, young Italian Roberto Tacchi has fared much better. With every game he's played, he has simply got better and better. The versatile teenager has thrived after being given free rein to run up and down the right wing, with seven-figure offers already being turned down for him.

Name: Davor PEJOVIC (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 32
Position: D LC
Signed: 09/01/09, £9,000 Wage Auction

RMR Bio:

Having been much sought-after as a free agent, interest in youngster Davor Pejovic has cooled somewhat following some average performances for the RMR youth sides. Agreeing to take a wage cut saw him earn a contract extension, although he knows as well as anyone that his future is in the balance.

Name: Michele CANINI
RMR Squad Number: 33
Position: D C
Signed: 24/02/09, £126,000 Wage Auction

Real-Life:

Tough-tackling centre-back Michele Canini has been likened to Paolo Maldini in his time at Cagliari, and looks to be one of the bright hopes for Italian football. A left-footed defender, he has played for his country at U21 level.

RMR Bio:

A hot free agent after his Arctic Monkeys contract was terminated, Michele Canini has proven himself an absolute bargain. Having replaced Jermaine Taylor on the left side of the two centre backs, he is generally strong in the tackle but prone to schoolboy positioning errors. Canini's ability to play on the left gives him a definite advantage, as well as being one of the more senior heads in the squad, despite having many years still ahead of him.

Name: Alexis NORAMBUENA
RMR Squad Number: 5
Position: D RLC + WB RL
Signed: 28/02/09, £12,000 End-of-Contract Auction (1.FC Josef)

Real-Life:

Alexis Norambuena is a versatile Chilean defender who has recently signed for Polish First Division side Jagiellonia Bialystok. Prior to this, he had played over 100 games for Chilean side Union Espanola, with whom he won the Chilean League in 2005.

RMR Bio:

Brought in as a versatile man-at-the-back, Norambuena's quality performances from the bench have led to him challenging for a first-team spot. Since young Roberto Tacchi is more comfortable as an attacking winger, a change of tactics could see Norambuena get a run in the first team as the right wingback.

Name: Marek WASILUK
RMR Squad Number: 2
Position: D LC + WB L
Signed: 24/03/09, £200,000 Private Transfer (Tortue SG)

Real-Life:

A lanky young defender, Marek Wasiluk moved from his hometown club Jagiellonia Bialystok to Championship contenders Cracovia Krakow.

RMR Bio:

Wasiluk's transfer was already in the works when it was announced Mexican heart-of-the-defence Severo Meza was leaving the club, the tall defender having impressed in four seasons at Tortue SG. A strong and determined player, he will be looking to cement himself in the starting line-up for years to come.

Name: Maxime JOSSE
RMR Squad Number: 3
Position: D RC
Signed: 24/03/09, £500,000 Private Transfer (Kinghorn Hippopotami FC)

Real-Life:

A young centre-back who has come through the ranks at Sochaux, Josse has spent considerable time out on loan to get first-team football. Having previously appeared in the French Ligue 2 for Stade Brestois 29, he is currently wearing the #27 shirt for another Ligue 2 side, Angers SCO.

RMR Bio:

With the new season looming and the major blow of losing Severo Meza in an end-of-contract wage auction, RMR manager Law Martin found himself looking for a new star to build his defence around. Michele Canini had yet to prove himself as a consistent and reliable starter, and as such Maxime Josse was brought in from David Crighton's Kinghorn Hippopotami, for whom he had played over 500 games. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, impressing in pre-season performances and looking likely to be the first choice right centre-back ahead of Wasiluk.

Name: HWANG SUN-PIL
RMR Squad Number: 22
Position: D RLC + WB RL + DM
Signed: 25/03/09, £19,000 End-of-Contract Wage Auction (GS Iraklis Salonika)

Real-Life:

Having played for many years at South Korean side Daegu FC, Hwang Sun-Pil is now part of the military side, Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix, as he performs his two years military service.

RMR Bio:

With his contract at GS Iraklis Salonika running out, it was surprising how little interest there was in Hwang Sun-Pil. An extremely versatile defensive player, he was signed as an all-purpose handyman, filling in wherever needed. In addition to this, he brings dead ball expertise which has been shown to be sorely lacking. Whether he can get ahead of the club's other utility player, Alexis Norambuena, in the pecking order remains to be seen.

Name: Gustavo REARTE (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 24
Position: D/WB RL
Signed: 23/03/09, £8,000 End-of-Contract Wage Auction (Randledinho's)

RMR Bio:

A promising youngster, at 16 years old Gustavo Rearte is already finding himself competing for a spot in the first team. The Argentine is showing good development, and is particularly deadly from free kicks. Definitely one to watch.

Meet The Riot: #1 Goalkeepers

Name: Alan MANNUS
RMR Squad Number: 1
Position: GK
Signed: 24/02/09, £9,000 Wage Auction

Real-Life Bio:

Alan Mannus is a Canadian-born goalkeeper, who has made over 250 appearances for top Northern Irish side Linfield, having come through the club's youth ranks. He has also picked up three international caps for Northern Ireland.

RMR Bio:

Following the departures of Marcelo Bonan and Samir Ujkani, Alan Mannus was brought into the club at the end of season 3 as a capable understudy to first choice Jason Brown. Despite getting the #1 shirt, he's yet to make his first team debut.

Name: Antonio OJEDA (regen)
RMR Squad Number: 13
Position: GK
Signed: 28/02/09, £7,200 Wage Auction

RMR Bio:

Young Peruvian Antonio Ojeda is seen as an excellent long-term contender for the first choice goalkeeper spot. Having previously started for Villaviciosa United, Aarhus FC and FC Mancunia, he has so far only appeared for the RMR U21 side.

Name: Jason BROWN
RMR Squad Number: 19
Position: GK
Signed: 29/01/09, £74,750 End-of-Contract auction (Ze Fuehrers)

Real-Life:

Former Gillingham legend Jason Brown is a short-arse goalkeeper who makes up for his lack of height by having some of the best reflexes in the game. Currently plying his trade at Blackburn as second choice behind Paul Robinson, he has also picked up a few full international caps for Wales.

RMR Bio:

Arguably the number one target for RMR manager Law Martin from day one, Jason Brown finally joined up with the Riot after his contract at Ze Fuehrers expired at the end of season 2. Since then, he has established himself as the first name on the teamsheet, his reflexes frequently called into action due to the side's attacking tactics.

Afore Season Four

And so, to season four, due to start on the 1st. Some pretty brutal squad changing after the disappointing end to last season has left a new look River Medway Riot. New look not least in the sense of our funky new Lotto strips, again sponsored by Debenhams.

The big news on the transfer front was the targetting of Fernando Cavenaghi, of Kid Chameleon. Following Etien Velikonja's disappointing form towards the end of the season, Cavenaghi was being targetted as the perfect big-name signing to take some of the pressure off of young Anthony Modeste's shoulders. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be- Cavenaghi's wage demands proved too far beyond the established RMR structure, and the Argentinian international moved to Great Scot instead.

Velikonja's release, coupled with the transfer of Diego Silva to Screaming Vikings for £100k, left us a little thin on the ground in terms of striking options. 18-year-old Simone Dell'Agnello returned from a disappointing loan spell at CWA rivals Gary Town FC, but the wheels were put in motion to bring in some more established players to challenge Modeste, Dumisani Ngwenya and Kaimar Saag for the available first-team spots.

Panamanian striker Luis Tejada had been sitting on the bench at Sierra Olson's Loverdunk Lemurs side for a few season, and in a squad with Nicolas Anelka and Enrique Sola, didn't look like breaking into the first XI anytime soon. Some very fast-moving back-and-forth negotiations between myself and the charming Miss Olson resulted in a deal acceptable to both parties, worth £350,000, but which saw Riot youngsters Denis Huber, Florian Pizzinat and Edilson Mendes form the spine of the Lemurs' new youth side.

Also joining was man-mountain Bogdan Milic, whose contract at Chryssalid FC expired. At 6'5 and over 14 stone, Milic had again found his opportuities limited at his present club, and was delighted to get both a pay rise and the opportunity to relaunch his career. Since coming in, he's established a powerful partnership with Anthony Modeste, and looks like he could prove to be a valuable asset.

Riot's other big story was the acquisition of 22-year-old AMRC Giles Barnes, a man who had averaged over a 7.00 rating for pretty much his entire career to date, including over 250 games for previous club G700 F.C. His RMR career has got off to an even finer start, scoring 8 goals in 14 friendly fixtures, and picking up two man of the match awards. Although Barnes was transfer listed with a £1.1m fee, G700 manager Nick "The Greek" accepted a straight swap deal for hotly-tipped RMR youth product Marco Criscuolo.

Other transfer activity saw the strengthening of the defence to fit a new look formation, with the three-man defence ditched for four at the back to try and establish some consistency in form. While Riot scored the second-highest number of goals in the CWA Premiership last season, they were also second in the league for goals conceded.

As it stands, it seems River Medway Riot will line up the first game of the season as follows, in a 4-1-3-2 formation:

Anthony Modeste ... Bogdan Milic
Jozef Michalik ... Giles Barnes ... Roberto Tacchi
Arouca
Reto Ziegler ... Michele Canini ... Severo Meza ... David Romminger
Jason Brown

The flexibility of the formation and starting line up, particularly with Tacchi, Romminger and Barnes, allow for easy modification to both a more attacking 3-5-2 and a more defensive 5-3-2. Ziegler and Romminger have occasionally been employed as wingbacks in preseason, while Meza can become the fifth man in defence as a sweeper, if necessary.

At present, Riot are competing in a Greek competition, the "Big Cup", which features predominantly newer teams, but which is hosted by XFA Premier League runners-up Aspra Chomata F.C. The Riot invitation came as part of a transfer deal which saw Lucas Correa move to Chomata, and given their experience compared with the fresh-faced opposition, it is unsurprising RMR sit top of the table, unbeaten, having won 7 from 8.

Finally, a word on two other friendly games, both with scores which make the mind boggle. Having experimented with a ten-striker formation, in the hopes of catching their opponents offside, Riot took a sound beating at the hands of Northampton Hurricanes. Brazilian superstar Kaka set a new GW record in the process, scoring ten of the goals in a 17-4 victory for the Hurricanes- Fernando Torres also bagged six, with Damien Le Tallec rounding off the rout. The shoe was on the other foot, however, when Riot agreed to be the opposition in Francesco Toldo's Testimonial Game for Carnoustie Celtic. Despite giving up over 100 places to Celtic, Riot ran out 9-3 winners in a remarkably open game, with new faces Milic, Barnes and Tejada joined on the scoresheet by Modeste, Arouca, Gislason and Ngwenya.

Last but not least, voting is currently in process for the official River Medway Riot Away Strip Babe for season four. Campaigning from respected FC Highlanders boss Federico Rizzi has seen a surge in popularity for a return of Season 3's beautiful Alison Angel, but sources from inside the polling station suggest the Olsen Twins, Stacy Keibler and Myleene Klass are all in the running to fill Angel's dainty boots.

Tales from the River Medway.

And so the season is well underway, although due to being so AI-heavy, the CWA does have a tendancy to lag behind other federations a little in terms of games played.

Transfers

First off, a little update with the ins and outs as the close-season ended:

Out

Released: Sota Hirayama, Charles, Takanori Ueda, Sebastian Vaca, Jacek Wroblewski

Contract not renewed: Robert Marciniak, James Nevin

Sold: Ricardo Verduguez (72k), Freek Sabajo (8k), Kasper Hamalainen (30k), Lukasz Burkhardt (50k), Andros Townsend (250k)

Also, a number of players have gone out on loan to other sides.

In

Signings: Jason Brown (75k), Severo Meza (850k), Wellington Viana (11k), Ivan Carvalho Barbosa (9k)

Youth Wage Auctions: Lucien Thijssen, Nikola Simov, Ivica Balajic, Momar Seck, Mikhail Morgunov, Carlos Garcia, Julien Larbi, Tom Scargill, Walter Monteverde, Jan Abraham, Augustus Uzoma

So, for now, most of those are just meaningless names- youngsters waiting for their chance to shine. Some will succeed, others will fail. But all will get a shot at proving themselves. The two exceptions:

Jason Brown - Awesome former Gillingham goalkeeper who I've been tailing pretty much since day one in the GW. Ze Fuehrers had been transfer-listing him for some time out of my price range with no takers, so when his contract came up for renewal, it was simply a question of winning the wage auction and nabbing him on the cheap. Since then, has established himself ahead of Samir Ujkani as the first choice keeper.

Severo Meza - With the introduction of stadiums, a lot of teams were looking to cut costs and wage bills, and in a dead transfer market, there were some real bargains going. While I'd gone about balancing the books by releasing a lot of low earners, others were forced to offer pretty much their entire squad up for sale. One such manager was Seb Finck, of R Standard Liege, who'd won the first-ever Daria Morgendorffer Knockout Cup. Mexican Severo Meza had been the anchor of his defence, a 23-year-old who'd played over 250 games for the Belgian side. However, in these turbulent times, a record-breaking offer of the player's market value of 850k was too good to turn down, and since then, Meza has become as central to the team as Arouca or Anthony Modeste. With such an attacking formation, it's important to have a quality defence, and Meza has so far proven to be worth every penny.

Season So Far

But enough about signings- the season is underway, and at the time of writing, Riot sit comfortably in 10th, 11 games played (W3, D3, L5). Arouca, Paulinho Dias, Anthony Modeste, Lucas Correa and Saulo are all performing above a 7.0 average, with Modeste ranked 4th on the top scorers charts, having scored 7 goals in 11 games. So, things are looking pretty good. Results tell an incredibly inconsistent story- a 7-2 victory over 2nd-placed Team Trampled On was followed by a run of six without a win, including an ugly 3-6 defeat to Inter HollyValance. The side have been scoring a lot of goals, but they've been conceding them as well- one clean sheet in 11 speaks volumes, but likewise, there's only been one match in which we haven't scored.

In the first round of the Casual League Cup, River Medway Riot overturned a 2-1 defeat in the first leg with a scintillating 7-2 victory over Hamilton 1967. Etien Velikonja bagged a hat-trick, with Criscuolo, Saag and Modeste also getting on the scoresheet. The second round saw them drawn against Tim Smith's Langmere Athletic, where they are currently looking to overturn another first leg defeat, having gone down 3-1 at home.

Riot were less successful in the FA Cup, finding themselves put out 6-5 on aggregate by The Young Ones, having thrown away a 4-2 lead from the first leg.

Finally, on the youth front, both the Casual Youth League and Casual Youth Cup are well underway. Riot sit 5th out of 8 in the league, with 16-year-old striker Diego Silva Nascimento lighting up the home games and looking to be a hot prospect for the future. Lee Wilmot, a £10,000 signing from Luncarty Saints, struck twice against Gary Town FC in a 3-0 Quarter Final win, booking Riot a place in the Semi-Finals despite Davor Pejovic's red card.

Other news

In other news, the first stage of work at Preach Clubrooms is nearly finished- the Berengere Marcos Stand, Crisp End and Brook End have each had their capacities increased, while the Begona Rocca Stand was torn down and replaced with a two-tier stand filled with Pieghevole seating. The work has cost around £2m, and will give a capacity of a little over 20k once completed. There has been talk of raising funds to further develop the Brook End into a two-tiered stand with provision for corporate boxes, but this will depend on the financial situation of the club.

The Rumour Mill

Last but not least, time to look at what the future holds for the Riot. With Brazilian centre-back Lucas Galdino finding himself transfer-listed in order to raise funds for the club, it seems a cheaper alternative is being sought out. A number of names have been linked with the club, including none other than John Terry, transfer listed for £1m, but whose wages seem set to be a stumbling block. A possible move for P.F.C. Levski Sofia's Yasuyuki Konno is said to have been mooted at one point, with youngster Jose rumoured to be moving in the other direction as part of a deal, but word is that negotiations have stalled. Other names recently linked with Riot include centre-backs Gregor Balazic (DonZ FC) and Mohammed Nosrati (Afc.Asha) and midfielder Bacary Mendes (Mart's World XI). Riot scouts have also been seen at Deepdale Elite's training ground, although it is unclear who is being watched.

Brazilian goalkeeper Marcelo Bonan is also said to be on his way out, frustrated at being reduced to third-choice behind Brown and Ujkani, while young Dutch striker Stefan Wijngaarde and Guatemalan midfielder Julio Alvarez have been told their contracts will not be renewed.

And lastly...

Since somebody in the chat asked what "Gold Shoes From Chockers" was all about, a quick explanation- Chockers is a shoe shop along Chatham High Street. It was immortalised in the song "Welcome To The Medway Towns", an homage to the ladyfolk of Medway which can be downloaded HERE. Lyrics have been lovingly transcribed HERE.

Tis the (close) season

It's that time again: UPDATE TIME!

Season two is consigned to the history books, with FC Highlanders doing a stellar job of retaining their CWA Premiership title, and the mighty, mighty River Medway Riot showing just as much consistency by finishing 13th. Mmm... midtable.

As well as that, Preach Clubrooms, our humble home, hosted the first ever Daria Morgendorffer Knockout Cup Final, with R Standard Liege causing something of an upset, defeating the fancied Barcalonika FC 2-0. But no sooner had the Daria Morgendorffer trophy heads to that footballing hotbed, Belgium, than recruiting for the second season of the competition began. With both Liege and Barcalonika saying "count me in", could we see the two sides cross swords once more?

So, what does the close season mean for a club like River Medway Riot? Well, first and foremost, it's a question of deciding what to do with those who've started to catch the eye of the bigger clubs. Since most of this kind of player have developed at the club over time, they've generally been signed on reasonably low wages to begin with, which makes them all the more attractive now. With only five over-21's being locked, how do you decide who to cash in on, and who to keep hold of? This seems as good a way as any to introduce some of our stars.

Arouca is the heart and soul of the team, a lightweight midfield playmaker whose reputation has just grown and grown. Signed as part of the initial squad setup, he's now put in two seasons of ratings averaging over 7.0, and is far and away the best, most consistent player in the side. He's 23 now, but will he live to see 24? The way things are going...

...sorry, got sidetracked there. But Arouca is 23 now, with wages of 10k and has a market value of £2.5m. It would take at least twice that for him to leave the River- the side is literally built around his presence. He is our star player, and until he says he wants to move to win things, he's staying put.

Anthony Modeste has been a revelation- signed for 140k from bradford city a.f.c., he's developed into an incredibly quick star striker, and has led the line all season. At 21, there's every sign that he could be a superstar, and there have been offers around £2m turned down already. That said, 37 in 79 isn't a superstar strike rate- it's very good, but it's not excellent- and that perhaps has to do with the quality of the supply and the team around him, rather than any fault of his. With some of the new faces coming in already showing themselves to have scoring boots (see below), there's a big question mark over how much Modeste would feature next season if he remains at the River... could it now be time for him to move to greener pastures?

There has, however, been no interest in Modeste's strike partner, Kaimar Saag, which is a little surprising, but perhaps understandable. The same age and of a similar stature, Saag has spent the season racing away from CWA defenders onto the ball before putting it straight into the goalkeeper's arms, or over the bar. No, this is no namby-pamby rose-tinted blog. He didn't score enough goals, found himself drifting onto the bench and into a supersub mould, and now faces competition even for that. Saag and Modeste individually are both very good young players- they just struggle to play together. And, when it comes to the crunch, Modeste got the nod in the starting line-up. That said, Saag will still be around the River come season three, regardless of whether Modeste goes or stays- if nobody else wants him, he'll have to make do with benchwarming again.

And finally, Marco Criscuolo, a winger who's eager and has established himself in the River Medway Riot first team despite only being 18-years-old. While many of the U-17 graduates are wished all the best and sent on their way, Criscuolo is one of three who have bucked the rule (the others being Jozef Michalik and Andros Townsend) and made the step. Now we know there are scouts in the crowd watching him, with talk of a £2m price tag. With wages at just £854, he's a true success story of the River Medway Riot Youth Programme, and is now repaying the faith shown in him by giving tremendous value-for-money.

So, the answer to the question of "how to decide who to keep?"... well, it's a trick question. Build a young team. Players like Criscuolo, Michalik, Townsend, Ricardo Verduguez and Lucas Galdino are all still under-21, so their contracts can be auto-protected. Add to that the five locks- Arouca, Modeste, Saag, Paulinho Dias and Rurik Gislason- and a goalkeeper (Samir Ujkani) and you've got a team you can keep hold of. Ok, after next season things might go a bit pear-shaped, but there's plenty of time before then.

Before we take a look at the close-season comings and goings- and there are plenty of them- let's break this up a bit with some TOTALLY AWESOME AND REAL NEWS!!!

RIVER MEDWAY RIOT UNVEIL SEASON THREE KITS!

Replacing last season's Kappa 'sidestripe' designs, the new River Medway Riot strips have been designed by Legia in association with new official club sponsor Debenhams (located 240-246 High Street, Chatham). Continuing to feature River Medway Riot's Invicta horse in the lining, these stylish shirts are designed to prove that losing 5-0 doesn't always mean you have to look bad. The navy blue home strip is accompanied by two change colour strips, in white and magenta.

Now, to the ins and outs. Let's get down to the nuts and bolts- first and foremost, the outs.

Players Leaving River Medway Riot

Contracts terminated/not renewed (17):

Nuno Gomes, Rafaelle Rubino, Carlo Nash, Mario Frick, Lukasz Sosin and Luis Tonelotto (age catching up with them)
Daniel Jimenez, Kari Asgeirsson, Andy Jeffrey, Jack Redshaw, David McAuley, Eero Lempinen, Alberto Palacio and Mads Winther (youngsters who aren't good enough)
Ryan Jarvis, Maciej Mielcarz and Dean Marney (squad players no longer required)

Transfers (7):
£1 - Atle Hansen to Harborne Town
£1 - Andrew Crofts to BuXToN's BLuE ArMy.
£1 - Eric Carriere to Cookie FC
£1 - Mohammed Al-Sefri to R-Star United
£120k - Josh Wilson to Dylan's Deadly Destroyers
£250k - Tomas Pekhart to Neverton
£350k - Alexsandro de Carvalho to Poopsocks United

So, lots and lots of departures. The straightforward reason would seem to be a requirement to dramatically drop squad size and wage in light of the forthcoming stadiums expansion, but that shouldn't be taken to be the only reason. In the cases of Pekhart and de Carvalho, both turned a decent profit, but were still sold below their market value- it was a desire to get rid of them, as neither were performing as well as they should've been. But with a 35% clause on de Carvalho and 25% on Pekhart, should either of them come good, there could be some decent bank in it.

I'm less optimistic with Al-Sefri and Hansen, who also both carry 25%, but the thing to remember is that the percentage is for the profit made, not the total transfer fee. But with a sale of £1, virtually all of any future sale becomes profit, which becomes clause-worthy. If one goes for £100k, that's a neat £25k of it in my pocket. £1 auctions can prove to be worthwhile in the long run.

It's also unsurprising Jarvis, Mielcarz and Marney have all found new clubs very quickly- they're all good value players with a few seasons left in them, and had it not been such an urgent need to lower the wage bill, they would easily have been kept around as squad players, filling in when change was needed.

With FML going to box, a load of new managers have also come in, so that too must be taken into account. They'd do well to keep hold of their money as the economy's about to change with the stadium update (literally hours away from this post), and I've recommended that to many of them. As such, quite a few of the other squad players, who may well have been candidates to join Jarvis, Mielcarz and Marney jobhunting on Monster.co.uk are out on loan. Park Yo-Seb, Robert Trznadel, Zajko Zeba, Michael Woods, Steven MacLean and Nathan Sturgis are all getting games elsewhere, while they'd be on the fringes at Preach Clubrooms.

Players Joining River Medway Riot

Although the aim of the game was to reduce the wage bill and the squad size, that shouldn't have come at a cost of strengthening the side. While a total of 24 went out, that didn't mean there was nobody coming in, and since the season's finished, the following have been pictured in the River Medway Riot royal blue:

Youth free agent wage auctions: Stefan Wijngaarde (S), Mario Ferreira (AM RLC + FC), Maicon de Lima (AM C) and Miroslaw Cichy (DC + DM)

Signings from other clubs:

Etien Velikonja (21) - With his previous club, Pingvinen FC, leaving the GW, Velikonja was about to find himself without a club. A left-footed striker again with a decent turn of pace, he's been brought in to challenge Modeste and Saag for their spots in the first eleven.

David Romminger (26) - Another Pingvinen exile, Romminger is a quality player whose versatility means he can play comfortably pretty much anywhere across the defence or midfield. For £9,000 and 1.5k wages, he's an absolute steal.

Dumisani Ngwenya (25) - Thanks to the coach departing, Coventry's Mallard Party found themselves rooted to the bottom of the CWA Premiership all season, but despite that, South African striker Ngwenya still found the net 13 times in 40 appearances. If he can get a strike rate like that without a manager and in a poor team, there's no reason he can't do even better with us.

Diego Silva (22) - CWA Championship side Beartown Blues didn't seem bothered about keeping hold of their striker, and with only 5 goals in 44, perhaps it's easy to see why. Hopefully a switch will be just what he needs to fulfil his potential and start hitting the net more regularly.

Ivan Macalick (22) - A centre-back I've admired from afar for a while, it was a case of waiting until his Bonnick's Boys contract was up before snagging him at a cut price. The patience paid off, and he's already showing signs of greatness, filling in an Anders Rambekk-shaped void.

Edilson Mendes (15) - And finally, a young Brazilian defensive midfielder who, if he'd become a free agent, would've been earning ten times what he is now. Instead, he moved directly from Roy's Rangers FC. At £400, he has truly frightening stats for his age- could he be the long-term replacement for Arouca?

So what have we learned? "Graverobbing" is an excellent way of bringing in quality players on the cheap- if you're willing to keep your eyes open and look to see what is going on with teams and managers who are no longer in the Gameworld, there are real bargains to be had. For someone of Macalick's age and calibre (current MV: 400k and rising) to be coming to a club on 1k wages, you've got someone who not only is going to be of a good, playable standard on the pitch, but who is going to be attractive to other managers should things change and you decide to sell in the future. Nothing is more off-putting when scouting for players than OTT wages. The simple fact is, it is a dealbreaker, and there's nothing the seller can do about it once the wages are high.

My highest earner is a youngster by the name of Ricardo Damasceno, a 15-year-old Brazilian defender earning £16k. His stats are not those of a 16k player yet, but they are significantly impressive for someone his age, and I'm confident that he'll develop into someone who will be worth that. That doesn't mean I'm not uncomfortable with him earning that- if he flops, that's a fair whack of cash to be wasting, especially since it took destroying my wage structure to secure his signature. The next highest earner is Arouca, who has been on 10k since day one. Everyone else falls in line after that, in a squad of 65 players, at time of writing.

Basic finance management is not difficult- it's a question of showing restraint, knowing what you can afford and living within your means. At RMR, we're still turning a good profit, we're still very much in the black. We could afford to blow a couple of million on a player, if we so desired. At the moment, our biggest signing from another team is Saulo, who was signed for 200k. This season, he's averaged 6.99 as a starter, and his versatility has seen him switch from defensive midfielder to centre back with ease, giving a lot more tactical options in game. Our biggest sale was Rudolph Austin, in an auction which ended at £425k. His market value is now a quarter of that.

End of story... for now.

The first post is always the hardest.

But not on this occasion. Because this first post is an introduction, a kind of entrance point to the world of the mighty, mighty River Medway Riot, perennial bottom-feeders in the FML Keane GW. While other blogs may be able to give you a clue as to what it takes to remain competitive at the very highest level, or keep you entertained with tales of the fiercest of rivalries, here at "Gold Shoes From Chockers", we have no such lofty ambition. We just win a few, lose quite a few more, and talk in the third person to sound like we know what we're talking about. But enough of that.

I'm Law Martin, and I'll be your guide through these murky waters down here in the X-hundred rankings, and I'd like to say I'm more than qualified for the job. It would probably be enough simply for me to be a lifelong Gillingham fan, but my track record in Football Managers '08 and '07, and in Championship Manager for years and years before that, will more than back it up. No, it isn't for me to take Liverpool to the treble, nor to coach England to the World Cup final. My joy comes from knowing I've safely got a contract at Brighton for another season, as we grind out a 0-0 draw to stay up on goal difference. It's taking a foreign lower league club I've never heard of in the real world- say, someone like Siena of Italy, or Creteil of France- with players who are just names to me, and getting to know them, their quirks, the way they play, and doing what I can to make the place a little better than when I arrived. I am the journeyman manager- I play games of 20+ seasons, in which I'll manage maybe ten different clubs. There will be promotions, there will be relegations, there will be cup runs- for me, the FA Cup means a chance to manage Accrington at Goodison in the Third Round, where even the most optimistic of fans are predicting something of a spanking. Joy is then taking that shock 1-0 lead after six minutes. Sure, we may well end up losing 5-1, but for the briefest period of time, that feeling of doing the unthinkable, of upsetting the odds, of doing it for the little club with no money and a dilapidated stadium... that, for me is football, and that, for me, is Football Manager.

It's inevitable that in FML, River Medway Riot have sat in the middle of the rankings since day one. Of some 600 clubs, we've been somewhere between 200 and 350 for pretty much the entire time. Somewhere in the middle.

In the first season of the CWA Premiership, the team finished 12th out of 24. Mid-table obscurity.

As I write this, we sit 13th out of 22 in the second season of the Prem, with 14 wins and 15 defeats. Mid-table.

The Riot's current senior ranking is 323rd, the lowest it's been for a while, after a poor run of form- 323 out of 573. Somewhere comfortably in the middle.

And, for completeness- the youth team, a glorious 81st out of 216. Pretty middling as well.

As you may have gathered by now, this doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I quite like it. I win a few, I lose a few. Likewise, some of the players I sign turn out to be heroes (you'll be hearing plenty about names like Arouca, Jozef Michalik and Marco Criscuolo) and some turn out to be zeroes (you won't see "Jamie Mole" or "Heidar Helguson" in this blog again, trust me). I don't play FML to win- if I did, I wouldn't be playing it, because I'm not going to win. I play FML for fun, and there's plenty to be had- pulling off a transfer coup, scoring that last-minute winner against a team ranked far above you, or even just hanging out in the lobby, talking about the game, the beautiful game and who knows what else (Pub Manager Live, anyone?).

With the game going to box very soon, and with stadiums due to come in any minute now, it seems like FML is really about to get interesting. And all the time writing this blog is fun, I'll be here with a word or two about what the view's like from Average Joe Tracksuit.
